Understanding the feelings of grief

Grief affects everyone differently. It can bring a wide range of emotions and physical sensations that may come and go throughout the healing process.

Common experiences include:

· Difficulty concentrating

· Forgetfulness

· Sleep disturbance or insomnia

· Feelings of guilt

· Emotional numbness

· Loss of appetite

There are also other, less often discussed symptoms of grief, such as:

· Blurred vision

· Muscle weakness

· Moments of euphoria

· Sensing the presence, voice, or scent of the person who has died

· Feeling clumsy or accident-prone

Your emotions may shift quickly — feeling calm one moment and overwhelmed the next. This is a normal part of grieving.

It’s important to give yourself time and space to process what you’re feeling. While it can be tempting to withdraw, gentle connection with others and short periods of activity can help bring comfort and stability.

Avoiding or suppressing painful emotions can make the grieving process more difficult. Through grief counselling and bereavement support, you can safely explore your emotions in a compassionate space.

In our sessions, you’ll be encouraged to make room for your loss — to express feelings such as anger, sadness, loneliness, and fear for the future. With time, care, and understanding, it becomes possible to find moments of peace and begin to move toward acceptance.
