“Worrying doesn’t empty tomorrow of its sorrows; it empties today of its strengths” – Corrie Ten Boom
Whilst a certain amount of anxiety is good for propelling us into action, when the scales tip too far, you may experience symptoms such as loss of confidence, distorted thinking and huge overwhelm.
Anxiety finds its way into our lives without noticing and in its presence, we can temporarily lose a sense of ourselves. It becomes a problem when it interferes with our performance in our everyday lives. Whilst you may know the cause of your anxiety, it is important for the symptoms not to take control so that you maintain the ability to function.
By avoiding difficult thoughts and feelings we are keeping ourselves stuck and not in touch with our authentic selves. Wounds will keep resurfacing until we are ready to face them head on. Imagine yourself holding a beach ball under the water, you can try as hard as you like to keep it under but it will always pop back up. Until we recognize that we are avoiding our fears, they have nowhere to go.
